Construction update Nov. 2024: steel, stone, and art

It has been a busy few weeks at the Obama Presidential Center. Steel framing for the Home Court at the Obama Presidential Center, the programs and athletics facility, has arrived onsite, and in early October, the first steel beams were installed. Workers are also busy pouring the subfloor for the main level of the building, which will contain an NBA regulation-size basketball court, flexible program rooms, and welcoming spaces. The elevator and stairwells have also reached their final height!
At the north end of campus, stone and glass installation continues in an effort to complete as much of the exterior building “envelope” as possible before the weather turns. This work will continue through 2025, but the more work that can be completed this season, the easier and better it will be to make progress on the different interior spaces, especially within the Museum Building. Stone installation also continues on the east sides of the Forum and Library Buildings and at the Fruit & Vegetable Garden Pavilion. This includes an elevator tower that provides a view to the landscape and transports visitors from both levels of the parking garage up to the top level of the landscape.
At the Museum Building, the Julie Mehretu art glass installation on the north face of the Museum continues to draw the attention of workers, tour participants, and passersby in the park. Inside the building, some scaffolding has been removed, revealing the mass and shape of two three-story entry spaces.
