CHICAGO – The Obama Foundation announced today that South Side native John Roberson, a distinguished operational and management leader in the public and private sectors, is joining the organization as the incoming Executive Vice President for the Obama Presidential Center.
When the Center opens, Roberson will succeed Robbin Cohen, who has led The Obama Foundation’s efforts to design, build and prepare to open the OPC for the past 11 years.
Roberson most recently served as the Chief Operating Officer for the City of Chicago, and has served with distinction in various roles including Deputy Chief of Staff for the office of the Cook County Board President, Commissioner of four city departments including the Department of Aviation and the Department of Buildings and served as Chief of Development for the Chicago Housing Authority. Roberson has dedicated his career to economic development, strategic planning and operational management, among other critical experience. He was Vice President for Strategic Partnerships for the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce after holding leadership positions in non-profits that worked to diversify and strengthen the business sector. Mr. Roberson is an Air Force veteran who received commendations for his service during the Persian Gulf War.
“John has the right background, experience and reputation to lead the operations of the Obama Presidential Center as we prepare to welcome the people of Chicago and the world to our campus next year,” said Valerie Jarrett, CEO of The Obama Foundation. “John is well known for his rigor and commitment to excellence and his values-based leadership approach which aligns strongly with President Obama’s vision.”
“As a son of the South Side, I couldn’t be more proud to build on the tremendous accomplishments of the OPC team and deliver this game-changing institution to our community and for our great city,” Roberson said. “The Obama Presidential Center is going to be a world class destination, and I am so humbled to lead the team that will open it.”
As Executive Vice President for the Obama Presidential Center, Roberson will oversee the operations of the Center as the Center prepares to open in 2026. Roberson formally joins The Obama Foundation on July 7.
